Guide to Amazon Product Listing Optimization

Product listing is basically the product page for each of the items sold by sellers on Amazon. Even though it may sound simple, product listing holds great importance to every seller. A recent Jungle Scout study showed that among more than 1000 Amazon sellers, about half recognize the importance of a great product listing and are focused on maximizing profits through optimized product listings.

Collating your products and adding the necessary product information- setting up a product page may seem like a fairly easy and straightforward task. However, it is not. The previously mentioned Jungle Scout study found out that almost 30% of surveyed sellers find it challenging. Moreover, with the increase in the overall competition on Amazon, you can interpret that sellers are seeking strategies to make their product listings rank better.

Considering this, we are sharing with you a few recommendations on great Amazon product listings based on our own observations and experience managing Amazon listings. There are six important elements while listing a product on Amazon and it is important that you follow best practice guidelines for each of these elements.

1. Product Title
The product title has a limit of 250 characters (about 50 words). It is best if you use all of it. When you are crafting your product title, make sure to use simple words, and also include features that are unique to your product. Keywords in titles have the biggest effect, so include priority target keywords.

2. Product Images
For product images, you can have up to 9 pictures including a lead image. It is a known fact that visuals are naturally more engaging to any audience. In eCommerce markets and stores, visuals create the first impression among shoppers and persuade them to click on a particular product. For images that produce great results, make sure you have images of high resolution and at least 1000px in width and 500px in height. This will ensure that clarity is maintained even when the pictures are zoomed in. Also, be creative while adding the product images. You can click your products in different angles, scales and include pictures that show the size of your product or the way it is packaged.

3. Key Product Features
While writing the key product features, you have a limit of 1000 words which is approximately 250 words. The features appear as bullet points. It is a good idea to have 5 or more points and mention the specific reasons why someone should buy the product- something that differentiates the product from your competitors, important features, guarantee or warranty that is provided, and the problem it solves.

4. Product Description
The product description has a character limit of 2000 (with spaces) which is about 200 words. Use the product description to deep dive and elaborate upon the points that you have mentioned in the Key Product Features. Make sure to use short sentences, highlight the product features and benefits, make it relatable to the shoppers, and use target keywords.

5. Product Reviews
Product Reviews are one of the most important elements as it elevates the trust and confidence in the shoppers while buying a product. It may look like something out of your control but it isn’t. You can employ automated email campaigns to keep your customers informed and request them to provide sellers feedback and product reviews.

6. Product Rating
Product Reviews also influence the rating of a product. It is obvious that a seller with a 4-5 star rating is considered to be a very good seller. Again, this may look beyond your control, but it isn’t. If you have any bad reviews, understand the problem, and address it accordingly. On the other hand, with automated campaigns, chances are you will receive feedback before the customers send a negative review.
